The BIG stumps

This area was logged in the early 1900's. It was not part of King's Canyon until the 1960's so many of the giant sequoia trees were cut down. It must have been a monumental task- they are huge!!

This one shattered when it fell.

We called this the castle. It had cut marks but looked more like it fell.

This is the Mark Twain tree. It was cut to provide a slice for the Museum of Natural History in New York. We've seen it there.

They tried to cut this tree, but for some reason gave up. The tree grew around the saw marks and survived. The sequoia trees have an amazing ability to grow around scars from people and fire.
